President
Tom Young formed Spectrum Development Group, LLC in March of 2005 after 19 years in the hospitality business. He is the president and senior partner.
Tom came to the hotel business on an unusual track. After graduating magna cum laude from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, with a bachelor's degree in Political Science and a Master of Public Administration, he joined the City of Norfolk, first as an analyst for the Fire Department, then as a member of the City Manager's downtown development team. After participating in several major economic development projects, he headed the city's effort to attract a new flagship hotel adjacent to the city's waterfront and festival marketplace. Working with Marriott International, he was introduced to Dick Stormont, president of The Stormont Companies, a hotel development and operating company.
Tom joined Dick Stormont's team in 1990 and managed the construction of the Norfolk Waterside Marriott and Waterside Convention Center, a 405-room high-rise hotel connected to 100,000 square feet of meeting space. As a result of downturns in commercial development during the early 1990s, Tom remained with the hotel for three years as its Director of Engineering, during which time he gained valuable insights into hotel operations and served on the property's executive committee.
In 1995, Tom moved to Stormont's corporate office in Atlanta, where he managed several full- and limited-service hotel development projects, including the Brasstown Valley Resort in Young Harris, Georgia; the Emory Conference Center Hotel in Atlanta; the Wichita Hyatt Hotel and Conference Center; and the Horseshoe Bay Resort Marriott near Austin, Texas.
In 2005, Tom founded Spectrum Development Group, LLC, a company whose sole purpose is to provide development management and owner representation for the hospitality industry. Spectrum is primarily involved with the development of Marriott and Hilton brands, and its client list includes ING Clarion Partners, Grove Street Partners of Atlanta, GS Development, and Peachtree Hotel Group. With 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Tom and his associates are quickly establishing themselves as a highly sought-after, cost-effective resource for the management of all aspects of the hotel development process. The emphasis is on quality, cost, and schedule management, along with personal involvement in every project.
